Prof Dr Gülsün Sağlamer Awarded Fifth Honorary Doctorate Abroad!

Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), one of the leading universities in Lithuania, conferred the title of "Honorary Doctor" on Prof. Dr Gülsün Sağlamer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ITU ARI Teknokent, Founder of ITU Development Foundation and ITU Development Foundation Schools, and long-time Founding President of the European Women Rectors' Association (EWORA), at a special ceremony on 28 October.

Prof. Dr Gülsün Sağlamer, Chair of the ITU ARI Teknokent Board of Directors, Board Member of ITU Development Foundation, Founder and Founding Representative of ITU Development Foundation Schools, was awarded an honorary doctorate for her inspiring leadership for gender equality at a special ceremony in Lithuania. Halina Kabaskaita, Lithuania's first Ambassador to the Republic of Turkey, attended the ceremony and conveyed her congratulations. Mykolas Romeris University stated that Sağlamer was awarded an honorary doctorate for her 'significant contributions to the promotion of gender equality in European research and higher education institutions, her important scientific research in the field of gender equality, her great achievements in bringing together the global academic community to jointly address global challenges related to research policy, science assessment, the development of doctoral studies, the improvement of the quality of education, and her continuous support in opening wide international academic cooperation opportunities for Mykolas Romeris University'.

This is the fifth honorary doctorate Sağlamer has received from abroad, having previously received honorary doctorates from Carleton University in Canada (2001), Universitatea de Nord Din Baia Mare University in Romania (2002), Ovidius University of Constantza (2009) and Queens' University Belfast in the United Kingdom (2018).

Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė, Rector of Mykolas Romeris University, stated that they are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Gülsün Sağlamer to their country and university, and said: "Prof. Sağlamer has been and continues to be a shining example of academic and social leadership, inspiring many to achieve academic and professional success.

About Prof. Dr. Gülsün Sağlamer

Prof. Dr. Gülsün Sağlamer graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a Master's degree in Architecture (1967) and became the first and only female Rector of Istanbul Technical University, which has a history of more than 250 years (1996-2004).

She was a founding member and the first President of the European Women Rectors' Association (EWORA) (2015-2023), a member of the Executive Board of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) (2003-2024), President of the Community of Mediterranean Universities (CMU) (2012-2016), a member of the Executive Board of the European University Association (EUA) (2005-2009), a member of the Board of the Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP) (2009-2013) and a member of the EUA Research Policy Working Group (2005-2017).
